Theatre Maker, Performer, Director, Designer
MAXI MOSSMAN

Maxi Mossman is a Brisbane-based emerging theatre-maker with a focus in holistic, sensory theatre design, scenography and contemporary performance curation. After graduating with a Bachelor of Creative Industries (Drama – with distinction), her practice has been driven by blending visual and physical theatre and taking a design-led and body-first approach to creating theatre. Maxi's diverse skillset and passions in design-led direction, movement, performance, visual art, stage design, costume design, marketing and stage management, cultivates theatrical worlds which aim to swallow audiences whole. Through her work, Maxi strives to connect to people and stories in the creation and performance process, experimenting with ‘sensory’ and ‘elemental’ storytelling in a multi-disciplinary mode.

She entered the independent theatre scene with her award-winning directorial debut, A Drop Too Many (2023) in which she took on the role of director, writer, designer and performer. This site-specific production was the beginning of Maxi’s intense interest in multi-disciplinary performance.

Maxi has spent eight years investigating the interconnectedness between people and place through an authentically Australian lens. Growing up with personal ties to rural Australia, specifically bush and river landscapes, she has witnessed communities endure harsh climatic extremes, such as droughts, floods and fires. This connection has fuelled her exploration of the vast and turbulent Australian landscape through a visual art practice, which has evolved into a design-led theatrical process—dissecting organic textures, memories, and place-based stories.

Maxi has been a company member with Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre for the past 4 years. Throughout her time with the company she filled the roles of Schools’ Program Coordinator, Teaching Artist, performer and Marketing Coordinator. Through Zen Zen Zo, Maxi has trained rigorously in The Suzuki Method, Viewpoints and Butoh and now uses them as key methods within her practice. During her time with the company, Maxi has filled many roles in the IN THE RAW seasons of Be All//End All (2021), Rebirth (2022), Skelter (2023), Blushing (2024, Adelaide Fringe Festival 2025), HEAT (2025).

Maxi’s training has expanded beyond Australian boarders, with her training with physical theatre companies such as Frantic Assembly and TheatreRE (UK) and Butoh company, Dairakudakan (Japan). Through these experiences as well as working with local creatives such as: Zen Zen Zo, Dead Puppet Society, Collective Circus, Tony Brumpton and Shari Indriani Irwin, Jag Popham, Vena Cava and many more, Maxi has discovered a deep drive to create physical and visual theatre works that unravel authentic stories that connect to Australian audiences.
